Sunday Drive...Uptown Baby

After Church we decided to take a drive to Manhattan I wanted to go eat at Dallas BBQ and I wanted our daughter to see some of the places then I love in New York City. We went by Black Ink, Ink 124 ,then drove on 125th Street as we headed to my favorite Dallas BBQ ...Washington Heights! We ate like pigs and headed back to 125th to do some walking and browsing.

We rode through the Village, and then I went back in time and drove to Delancey and Orchard Streets. These 2 streets were the mecca for clothes shopping back in the day . Most of the store owners were Jewish and you could haggle the prices. We used to buy our daughter's leather suits every year for Easter, and they were hand made by a Russian woman.

We had a great time...laughs..jokes...memories...Blessed!!!

The POWER of ONE

I had a Union Meeting last night, and a discussion came up that kinda ruffled my feathers.

My Branch President, whom I respect started speaking on Shop Stewards duties, and I responded by saying "times are different".

I totally agree that the time we are supposed to process a grievance is LAW, but I was trying to explain that the environment we are in these days, it seems like no one has the time anymore.

The Postal Service has continually pushed back our starting time, claiming they can't get us the mail from the Plant.
So 30 years ago, we were starting work at  6 am, and our only worries were the days that checks came out.
We didn't have the parcels we have today.
We didn't have scanners to track deliveries.
We didn't have Supervisors who didn't come up through the ranks
We didn't have Carriers being robbed and shot while performing their duties.
We didn't have irate customers complaining because they went online and saw that a package was scanned attempted , and they were home.
We were able to get off work at 2:30 and do other things.
Now, we start at 8-9:00 am, and don't get home till 8-9:00 pm.
We get home and sit down, and wake up at 4 in the morning, still in our uniforms.
We are overworked, and have to get sick to have a day off.

I will be the first to admit, that I did not explain it like this last night, when I was given the opportunity by our Branch President to address the Branch. I didn't come across as I wanted, but there were a
few of the Stewards who came to me after the meeting who heard me LOUD and CLEAR

TIMES HAVE CHANGED!

So I have been beating myself up all night, and today.
I have come to this final conclusion.

I would rather speak and be misunderstood...than stay quiet and never have a voice. You can always clear up what you meant to say, but if you don't even attempt to be heard, you will never have the chance :-)

Be Blessed!

Our Existence

Snow

Wow,
It's almost 1 am, and here we go again.
I looked out the front door, and my backyard, and we are getting the second round of snow. Just like they said we would :'(
This is really getting depressing, but somehow it seems like I am actually accepting this as the new normal.
In my 32 years with The Postal Service, I cannot remember a year when we have received storm, after storm, after storm.
We are bringing mail back everyday from homes where it is too slippery to even attempt delivery.
There is snow and ice in some States where highways are like parking lots, because the residents are not used to driving in this stuff.
They are just abandoning their vehicles, and walking to the nearest shelter, or home .
It has snowed so much lately, that I finally went on Craigslist two weeks ago and purchased a used Toro Electric Snow Shovel (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B3fiiuk0EqE) for $40 (it works great).
We can't find sidewalk salt ANYWHERE, So I have resorted to SAND ( better for the environment).
My wife worked from home today and she decided to save my back by shoveling the driveway and the front of the house for me so I wouldn't have to do it when I got home.
I am Grateful for that :-)
Oh well, who am I to complain?
I guess this is all in Gods plans.
I just needed to vent at 1 in the morning...LOL
Sleep well...Be safe...God Bless You my friends!

Daily Photos 1/3/14

What a STINGING wind!
Truly a sign of the times.

We had some newer Letter Carriers who were concerned about this 8-10 inches of snow (a small amount)
Some were thinking that , because a State of Emergency was issued by The Governor, that we didn't have to work
C'MON SON!!!!

I have delivered mail in 25-30 inches of snow...SAFELY!

We are LETTER CARRIERS...WE DELIVER!!!

Happy New Year! 2014

Happy New Year!
We started the New Year in Church, and had a Blessed time.
For the past 3 years , I wake up on New Years Day and make my way to Coney Island in Brooklyn for the annual Polar Bear Plunge.
After cooking breakfast for my wife and daughter, I got on the road at 11:55 am for a 1 pm start.
I was doing 80mph to get there, and I made it at 12:35...to Coney Island.
As always, it was cold on that beach.
Make this YOUR YEAR...my friends.
