I had a Union Meeting last night, and a discussion came up that kinda ruffled my feathers.
My Branch President, whom I respect started speaking on Shop Stewards duties, and I responded by saying "times are different".
I totally agree that the time we are supposed to process a grievance is LAW, but I was trying to explain that the environment we are in these days, it seems like no one has the time anymore.
The Postal Service has continually pushed back our starting time, claiming they can't get us the mail from the Plant.
So 30 years ago, we were starting work at 6 am, and our only worries were the days that checks came out.
We didn't have the parcels we have today.
We didn't have scanners to track deliveries.
We didn't have Supervisors who didn't come up through the ranks
We didn't have Carriers being robbed and shot while performing their duties.
We didn't have irate customers complaining because they went online and saw that a package was scanned attempted , and they were home.
We were able to get off work at 2:30 and do other things.
Now, we start at 8-9:00 am, and don't get home till 8-9:00 pm.
We get home and sit down, and wake up at 4 in the morning, still in our uniforms.
We are overworked, and have to get sick to have a day off.
I will be the first to admit, that I did not explain it like this last night, when I was given the opportunity by our Branch President to address the Branch. I didn't come across as I wanted, but there were a
few of the Stewards who came to me after the meeting who heard me LOUD and CLEAR
TIMES HAVE CHANGED!
So I have been beating myself up all night, and today.
I have come to this final conclusion.
I would rather speak and be misunderstood...than stay quiet and never have a voice. You can always clear up what you meant to say, but if you don't even attempt to be heard, you will never have the chance :-)
